TWO schoolboys who died in a tragic rail accident in March have been remembered at an awards ceremony at their school.

Tributes were paid to Stuart Adams and Lee Mullis in the form of memorial awards given at Longfield School's presentation evening.

The awards, which were presented by Tyne Tees Television presenter Andy Kluz, recognised sporting excellence and were presented to Faye Bowles, Laura Meaney and Thomas Watson.

Keith Cotgrave, headteacher at the specialist sports college, said: "The young people receiving awards, trophies and certificates represent some of the success in what has been an excellent year.

"There is no better testament for our hope for the future than to acknowledge the achievement of those who will shape it."

Other prizes awarded were: The Rotary Prize - Michael Lowery; Award for Citizenship, donated by Alan Milburn MP - Kelsey Fothergill and Terri Cartwright; The Dr Ions Memorial Cup for best overall GCSE results - Robert Steer; the Mark Parr Attendance Cup - Christopher Thompson.

Other trophies and certificates were presented for examination success, form prizes, subject prizes as well as sports such as cross-country, swimming, soccer and athletics.

Members of the local authority, governors, parents and other invited guests attended.

Stuart, 15, and Lee, 14, were killed when they were hit by a train while playing on rail lines at the Five Arches Bridge, in Darlington.

* Pupils and staff at Longfield School took part in an unusual sponsored run to raise £150 for Children in Need.

They took part in a cross-country run dressed in bright yellow, while their hands were tied to those of a friend.

As well as the run, form 7HBP students raised money with a bring and buy sale, and a Pudsey bear raffle.
