A JUDGE who jailed a 28-year-old man for 12 months for unlawful wounding and criminal damage said people were fed-up with alcohol fuelled violence.

Appearing for sentence at Durham Crown Court was Robert David Hancock of Roselea, Witton Gilbert, near Durham.

Robert Adams, prosecuting, told the court how Hancock had been in Witton Gilbert Workingmen's Club on New Year's Day in a very drunken state.

He had taken exception when his then girlfriend had wanted to move away and a skirmish began between Hancock and his girlfriend's son.

During the scuffle a glass Hancock was holding was broken and his girlfriend's son received a deep cut on his arm requiring several stitches.

Mr Adams said Hancock had then gone round to his girlfriend's home and when she and her son arrived they found the house covered in blood and several household items smashed.

Peter Schofield, defending, said Hancock was sorry for what had happened and now had a very positive attitude to life and was trying to get on with running his own business.

Sentencing Hancock Judge Esmond Faulks said Hancock had been drunk at the time of the offences and told him: "The public is utterly fed-up with alcohol fuelled violence.''
