Police confirmed at a press conference today that a murder enquiry was underway following the death of a Middlesbrough man.

Senior police officers from Cleveland are in discussions with the foreign office and colleagues in Amsterdam and expect to fly out to the Dutch capital tomorrow.

Police believe they know who the dead man was but have been unable to contact relatives.

A friend of the dead man, who was also stabbed, is still in hospital but his condition is not life threatening.

In a separate incident a Dutchman was attacked with a broken glass following Middlesbrough's match with Alkmaar on Thursday night. A British man has been arrested.

Det Chief Supt Mark Braithwaite said: "There was a stabbing in the early hours of this morning outside a bar in Amsterdam.

"As a result one man has died and another suffered serious injuries although fortunately they are not life threatening.

"Cleveland police are liaising closely with our counterparts in Amsterdam who are carrying out a murder enquiry.

"We understand the man who died and the one badly hurt are both from Cleveland but as yet we have not been able to make contact with family members.

"The two men visited a bar called Pinochio's at Warmoestraat in the centre of Amsterdam where it appears there was a confrontation with a third man at about 3am.

"All three went outside, a stabbing occurred in the street and that resulted in the death of one man.

"Two senior detectives from Clevelad's murder investigation team are in regular contact with the Dutch authorities and there is a possibility they will fly out to Amsterdam this weekend."

"In a separate incident in Alkmaar which occured after the game a Dutch man was the victim of a serious assault and suffered severe facial injuries inflicted with a glass.

"It is not linked with the stabbing."
