CAMPAIGNERS fighting to keep rural green space across England have lodged objections to a housing development.

Residents in Ingleby Barwick have been given a one-week extension to voice their opinions to plans for 19 homes on the Round Hill estate.

The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) is unhappy that more countryside will be replaced with buildings if Stockton Borough Council approves the plans.

In a letter of objection, Jan Arger, of the Stockton and District CPRE, wrote: "Our objections to the proposed residential development are on the basis of loss of green- wedge space.

"We are extremely concerned at the ongoing incursions and loss of open space. Each development may be relatively small in itself, but the combined result in the long term could render the green wedges meaningless and ineffective."

Local businessman Dave Weatherall and two friends acquired the land, near Bettys Close Farm, and hope to sell 19 plots for executive homes.

An estimated £3m profit will be generated from the sales, with a sum going to the Stockton council to provide a country park and nature reserve.

Householders are hoping to form a registered action group to officially oppose the planning application.

Stockton council has extended the deadline for objections to Monday. They should be sent to Stockton Borough Council, Planning Department, Gloucester House, Church Road, Stockton, TS18 1TW or log on to www.stockton.gov.uk
