MANAGERS of a number of east Durham community buildings have turned to high-tech systems to help beat the burglars.

The bosses of the units in the Eden Hill area of Peterlee have resorted to the DNA-based deterrent SmartWater to help deter thefts at their premises.

SmartWater is a forensic marking system with a unique code etched into it, which will enable any marked item to be traced back to its owner.

It has the added benefit of "staining'' thieves in the act of burglary.

The innovative system has been applied to all valuable property in the Eden Hill and Chapel Hill North Residents' Association buildings, Pride House in the estate's Crawford Avenue, and the White House Community Centre in Eden Lane.

SmartWater Technology, which produces the liquid, claims those using it to mark their property are five times less likely to become victims of theft.

The new system is being promoted by the Communities First project, in partnership with Durham Constabulary and Easington District Council.

Ken Wilson, Communities First project manager, said: "This is an excellent example of partnership working and the use of the latest technology to make life difficult for criminals and easier for law-abiding citizens.''

Any residents living in the Eden Hill area can also have their valuables and vehicles marked with SmartWater free of charge by contacting Susan Ledger on 0191-384 2785.
