AN instrumental group from the southern Appalacian region of the United States will be appearing in north Durham next week.

Chester-le-Street District Council's arts development team will be hosting a music and dance performance by Appalachian Roots at the Riverside Suite of the Durham County Cricket Club at 7.30pm on Tuesday.

Performed by Ira Bernstein and Riley Baugus, concerts include percussive flat-footing, buck dancing, rhythm tap dancing, French-Canadian step dancing, English clogging, South African boot dancing, hambone, old-time fiddle and banjo tunes and mountain songs and ballads.

Mr Bernstein has performed in concerts and at festivals all across America and Canada, as well as in 16 other countries around Europe and Asia.

He has shared the stage with many of the world's greatest tap and step dancers, and has appeared numerous times on television and in theatrical productions.

Mr Baugus is a North Carolina native who began singing and playing music at an early age. He has played with many old-time string bands including The Red Hots, Backstep, and the Old Hollow Stringband.

The performance is part of the Elements drama initiative, a countywide programme of work which promotes access to high-quality professional entertainment in community settings.
