TWO officers have been shortlisted in a national awards scheme for their exceptional police work.

Durham Police officers PC Dave McKenna, who patrols the beat in Sedgefield division, is among the nominees for community police officer of the year. Sergeant Bob Brown, head of the force's motorbike section, in Durham City, is a finalist in the lifetime achievement in policing category at the 14th annual Jane's Police Review Gala Awards.

The awards will be presented by Home Office minister Hazel Blears MP at a ceremony, in London, next Thursday.

PC McKenna, 36, patrols the Horndale and Middridge areas as part of the Newton Aycliffe beat team.

The Gateshead-born officer joined the force six years ago after working as a DSS benefit fraud investigator in Darlington. For the past 18-months, he has been forging links with the community on his beat.

Insp Andy Neill, head of the beat team, said: "Dave is very much an old-fashioned copper who is prepared to use modern methods and skills.

"He is held in high regard even by some of those he has arrested, who recognise he balances being firm with fair."

Sgt Brown has overseen the forces' motorbike unit for 13 years and has been nominated for his work in reducing casualties on the roads.

He was instrumental in establishing the annual Bikewise event, which attracts thousands of people every year, and teamed up with bikers to organise an easter Egg run, delivering presents to children in local hospitals.

Chief Inspector Paul Goundry, head of road policing for the force, said: "Bob Brown's enthusiasm is infectious and his team is always buzzing with the same energy. He is a true team player."
