l The chimney, along with the rest of the Eastgate plant, was commissioned in 1965.
l More than 100 workers built the cement works and the 2,800ft-long conveyor running into it from the quarry above.
l The chimney extracted waste from two kilns - two 60-metre-long steel tubes with a maximum diameter of 4.3 metres and weighing 500 tonnes each. Each kiln rotated at 1.3 revolutions a minute.
l The great heat in the kilns was produced by burning coal.
l In 1984, facilities were installed at Eastgate to use discarded rubber tyres as a supplementary fuel. Blue Circle said this would cut coal consumption by 7.5 per cent. But test burnings sparked protests from environment groups about dark smoke pouring out of the chimney and the plan was abandoned.
