WOMEN have started to break through the earnings glass ceiling in local authorities, accounting for about half of the top-paid posts in a number of councils in the North-East, according to research.

The GMB union yesterday revealed that in Darlington more than half - 53 per cent - of the top five per cent of earners were female.

At the bottom of the regional league was South Tyneside and Newcastle, with 36 per cent of top earners being women.

But that was still a long way from the bottom of the league for the country, which saw The City of London with only 14 per cent of top earners being women.

Middlesbrough came second in the regional league with 48 per cent, followed closely by Hartlepool and Stockton with 46 per cent.

At 45 per cent was North Tyneside, followed by Redcar and Cleveland at 44 per cent, and Gateshead at 42 per cent.

Sunderland has 38 per cent of top female earners and Durham has 37 per cent.
