A WELL-KNOWN family butcher's is marking a milestone in the business with a week-long celebration at its shops.

Harry Coates and Son's is 40-years-old this week, four decades after the opening of its first shop in Trimdon, County Durham, by the father of the current owner.

Although Harry Coates senior died five years ago, his son, also named Harry, has taken over the business's three shops, in Framwellgate Moor, Coxhoe and at new premises in Trimdon.

Over the years, the company has regularly won awards for its range of products, including sausages, pies, and prepared meals.

The latest accolade came at the recent National Barbecue Championship, when the company won best pork product.

Mr Coates junior said he is marking the milestone by highlighting some of the company's traditionally-popular products.

"We've taken four of the best sellers over the years, which were formulated 40 years ago by my parents, Harry and Eva, and we're offering them at half price."

The offer applies to pork and beef sausages and steak and kidney and minced beef pies.

There is also a free prize draw for customers, with a chance to win a £40 voucher at each of the three premises by the end of the week.

On Saturday, all three shops will be selling hot sausage sandwiches for £1, with proceeds to be donated to St Cuthbert's Hospice.

Mr Coates, who has spent his working life in the business, said he does not plan to be still in the trade in 40 more years.

But he hopes the family name lives on in some way.
