Yorkshire's mind will be firmly fixed on promotion at Derby today when they begin their Frizzell County Championship game against bottom-of-the-table, Derbyshire.

Captain Craig White last night called upon his team to make every effort to secure the victory that will take them back into the top flight next season.

With two away matches remaining, Yorkshire need 18.5 points to be certain of going up and a win over Derbyshire would secure 14 points, plus up to eight bonus points which are on offer.

Beating Derbyshire would remove all the pressure from their last game of the season against Northamptonshire who could present a late challenge if they beat Durham in their current game at Riverside and then Yorkshire - but that is only possible if Yorkshire fail to win at Derby.

Yorkshire have been a two-headed team this season, plumbing the depths in the totesport League while so far remaining unbeaten in the Championship.

And if they come away unscathed from Derby and Northampton it will be the first time since 1928 that they have gone through a Championship season without tasting defeat.

On that occasion 77 summers ago, they won nine and drew 23 of their first class matches but could only finish third in the Championship which was won by Lancashire.

Leg-spinner Mark Lawson is included in today's squad in place of off-spinner Richard Dawson, who is out for the season after breaking a knuckle bone in his right hand.

Fast bowler, Steve Patterson, is a late choice ahead of Chris Silverwood, now fully recovered from a hamstring strain.

Hull-born, Patterson, joined the squad of 12 after bowling nine overs for just 22 runs while picking up his maiden wicket for Yorkshire in their totesport debacle against Derbyshire on Wednesday.

Byas was complimentary about the bowling of Patterson and Ian Harvey in that match but scathing about the attack in general which sent down 19 wide deliveries resulting in 31 additional runs.

"To give away so many runs in wides was absolute rubbish and without them we would have won the match," said Byas.

"Apart from Joe Sayers, our main batting was also very disappointing and we would have been bowled out even more cheaply, but for Joe receiving some solid support late in the order."

* Scarborough Cricket Club chief executive Cec Snell has announced that he is to retire in December from the post he has held for 15 years.

Snell, however, still intends to carry on at the club in a reduced capacity next season.
