FOREST rangers are inviting people to trek to the top of a hill dubbed Cleveland's Matterhorn.

The summit of Roseberry Topping is the destination for a free family walk, setting out from Pinchinthorpe Visitor Centre in Guisborough Forest.

It is the final outing in a series of five walks as part of the Forestry Commission's Active Woods health campaign, backed by the British Heart Foundation.

Ranger Cath Brason said: "The walks have been incredibly popular and it shows that, given a chance, folk jump at the chance of stepping out. Roseberry Topping is a fabulous landmark, rich in folklore.

"It's reckoned that the Vikings worshipped Odin nearby and we'll be relating more of its history and wildlife."

To encourage families to join all the walks, youngsters have been given their own Pinchinthorpe passport, with a stamp for each outing they join.

The four-hour walk, on Sunday, August 14, organised in conjunction with Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, sets out at 10am.

Walkers are advised to bring stout footwear and outdoor clothes. For more details, call (01287) 631132.
