A COMMUNITY is rallying round to improve a children's play area.

The park, in Arena View, Catterick Garrison, contains only two sets of swings, but residents hope to make it a playground to be proud of.

Money for more equipment has already started to come in, including from a sponsored row at the village gala day, which raised more than £1,200.

Terry Hart, who rowed 35km on an indoor rowing machine in three-and-a-half hours, said: "Like many others on the estate, I have got a young family who need somewhere safe and fun to play outside.

"Local residents have been really generous. We all know there is the potential for the play area to be a cracking facility but, at the moment, it is just going to waste.

"Play equipment is not cheap, but we will get there."

Steve Smith, who runs Progressive Martial Arts, in the village, has donated £500 to the appeal, and Richmondshire Community Safety partnership has given £1,000.

Councillor Rob Johnson said: "The park is regularly used by young families.

"The only problem is the lack of equipment, and I hope the council and the community can work together to make the play area an even more valuable resource for local residents."

It is hoped new equipment will be chosen and installed by next month.
