THE £20m home of Darlington Football Club is to be given its third name in two years after the Quakers rejected a new offer from their stadium sponsor.

The venue has been known as the Williamson Motors Stadium since last August after the Peugeot dealership struck a deal with club bosses.

But the company's offer of a fresh two-year package, with similar financial terms to the previous arrangement, has been turned down.

The Northern Echo understands that talks are taking place with Teesside-based radio station TFM, although other potential sponsors are in the frame.

Williamson Motors had agreed its one-year deal with the club's owner, the Sterling Consortium, only weeks after the Quakers were rescued from the threat of liquidation last year.

Ex-chairman George Reynolds had originally revealed, in June 2003, that the 25,000-capacity venue would be known as the Reynolds Arena.

But following its takeover, Sterling had the Reynolds Arena sign removed from the side of the south stand.

Yesterday, motorists passing by the ground on the A66 witnessed a similar sight as the Williamson Motors name was pulled down.

Last night, the car firm's managing director, Simon Williamson, told The Northern Echo he was disappointed that a new package could not be thrashed out.

"I would rather it had been a long-term agreement, but basically they wanted more money than we could give them," he said.

A club spokesman said last night: "We would all like to thank Simon Williamson and the team at Williamson Motors for their wonderful initial sponsorship agreement."

In the meantime, the ground will be known simply as the Darlington Football Stadium.
