SUSPICIONS about child abduction attempts were raised again last night, after it emerged two incidents involving white vans have been reported in Darlington in the past ten days.

Police moved quickly to reassure concerned parents, but reissued safety warnings to children.

The latest incident was yesterday, at 9.30am, when two men in a white van approached two boys, asking them if they wanted a "really good job".

A similar incident was reported on Thursday, July 21, when two boys were asked if they wanted a day's work during their school holidays.

The town was on alert last month when eight suspected child abduction attempts involving drivers of white vans were reported.

Detective Inspector Paul Harker, of Darlington CID, reviewed about 30 calls from worried members of the public, but concluded none were genuine attempts to abduct children.

In the light of the latest reports, police chiefs reassured parents of their children's safety during the summer holidays.

Inspector Alan Davidson said: "I would reiterate Det Insp Harker's original comments and findings. The matter was thoroughly investigated and we are satisfied with the conclusion. That is still our opinion.

"However, these incidents will also be fully investigated, and we would encourage people to report anything they are unhappy or suspicious about."

Anyone who has information about suspicious vehicles or activity is asked to call Durham Police on 0845 606 0365.
