A BISHOP Auckland youngster has won a national competition after designing a new mascot for British Gas.

Ten-year-old Hayley Bradley, of Escombe Road, beat entries from across the country with her blue cartoon character, Gassy.

She won £2,000 in computer vouchers after being named the overall national winner, as well as seeing her creation come to life on the British Gas website.

Hayley, a pupil at St Anne's Primary School, said: "I'm really happy to have won the national competition. It's great to know that my character will be used on the British Gas website and everyone will get the chance to see him and learn about safety in the home."

Allan Wood, from British Gas, said: "Hayley obviously has a talent for drawing and her character managed to get the safety message across in a very amusing way.

"As well as coming up with the Gassy character, she also took the trouble to draw him in various safety scenarios, which is why she won."
