A MOBILE skatepark was erected in the heart of Darlington yesterday, as part of a series of events aimed at keeping youngsters active during the summer holidays.

The skatepark, for young people with skateboards or rollerblades, will be in the town's Market Square every Tuesday for the rest of the school holidays.

The skatepark is just one of the events and activities being organised by Darlington Borough Council over the summer.

A spokeswoman said: "We hope to provide a range of activities for young people with different interests and skills.

"Other sporting events include swimming courses, badminton, squash, netball, and parents and carers can swim for free.

"There are also DJ workshops, graffiti art classes, hair and beauty sessions and younger children can learn how to make kites and masks."

Many of the activities, including the skatepark, are free.

Although children of all ages are catered for, the main target area is 13 to 19-year-olds.

The summer programme includes an opportunity for youngsters with a talent for comedy to step into the spotlight.

The Stand-up Comedy Warehouse is being staged at Darlington Arts Centre, in Vane Terrace, and is welcoming young comedians to try out their jokes, songs and sketches in front of family and friends.

The event is from Monday, August 8, to Friday, August 12, from 10am to 4pm each day.
