THIEVES have carried out a string of burglaries after householders failed to lock doors, windows, garages and sheds.

Intruders have stolen items from two houses and ten outbuildings during the past three weeks in the area around Barnard Castle.

Sergeant Bill Dutton, of Barnard Castle police, said yesterday: "The warm weather seems to have made people forget about locking up when they pop out of their homes for a short while.

"We would like to remind everyone to make things secure every time they go out, because thieves look for opportunities and can make off with all sorts of property very quickly."

Burglars got into two homes at Cockfield on different days when back doors were left unlocked, and in each case mobile phones were stolen.

Items taken from sheds and garages, all of which were unlocked, include chainsaws, strimmers, hedge cutters, lawnmowers and other tools.

Sgt Dutton said simple padlocks can deter many thieves, but anyone who wants further advice about keeping their homes safe can contact a crime prevention officer by calling 0845 606 0365.

Anyone who knows anything about the recent thefts, or knows where any of the stolen property is, is asked to call Acting Sergeant Jeremy Downing on the above number or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
