ORGANISERS of a nostalgic event paying tribute to the Aycliffe Angels are appealing for help to stage a wartime display.

Lucy Thompson and Ann Symons, from Coundon, were given £7,850 from the Home Front Recall Lottery fund to put on an afternoon tea party and evening dance next month at Leeholme Working Men's Club.

They have also used the cash to trace former munitions workers employed at the Royal Ordnance Factory, Newton Aycliffe, during the Second World War.

Any money left after the event on Saturday, August 20, will pay for Aycliffe Angels to travel to London for the Remembrance event at the Royal Albert Hall and Cenotaph in November.

Mrs Thompson said: "We appealed through The Northern Echo for Angels and the response was grand.

"We are putting on an exhibition of memorabilia from the war years and would like people to lend us any items they have."

Tickets for the dance, which has music from the Wearside Big Band and starts at 8pm, cost £3. They are available by calling Mrs Thompson on (01388) 662925 or Mrs Symons on (01388) 665587.
