YOUNG and old alike stepped out in fancy dress to help raise money for a North-East children's charity yesterday.
The 14th Yellow Brick Road Walk was reason enough for young walkers to don appropriate Wizard of Oz costumes.
Outfits included everything from Dorothy to the tin man and the wizard from the famous musical, with pathways round the restored Saltwell Park, in Gateshead, becoming the Yellow Brick Road for the day.
Members of children's TV show Byker Grove started the walk, the first of two in the region, with a second to take place next month at Stockton's Preston Park.
The event featured live music to keep walkers entertained, tricks and illusions by members of Newcastle Magic Circle, who staged workshops, jugglers, arts, crafts, and storytelling.
There was also an airbrush tattooist, face painting, talent and fancy dress competitions.
Walkers were sponsored to raise funds in aid of the Children's Foundation, which raises funds for medical and lifestyle research to combat childhood diseases and conditions, including cerebral palsy and autism.
It also supports NHS service delivery and several community-based projects designed to improve children's health and well-being.
Further information on the Stockton walk is available from Claire Rivers at the Children's Foundation, on 0191-202 3006.
