A car park is to open next week to compensate for the closure of another near a busy city centre, although 83 spaces will still be lost.

The 190-space Framwelgate Peth car park, in the shadow of Durham railway station, will close on Sunday, to make way for a housing development.

But it will be replaced by a new parking area, for up to 107 vehicles, near the junction of Framwelgate Waterside and Sidegate.

Neil Smith, Durham City Council's director of environmental services, said: "If you used Framwelgate Peth for short-stay parking, it will now be best to use Millburngate multi-storey instead.

"Long-stay parking is more appropriate at the new Framwelgate Waterside car park."

The Saturday park-and-ride service from County Hall means a car load of passengers can park and travel into the city by bus for £1.

Passengers can be picked up or dropped off at North Road, Millburngate and Leazes Road, with the first bus at 8.30am and the last service at 5.56pm.

The park-and-ride service is subsidised jointly by the city council, AMEC Developments, who are carrying out work in the city centre, and the county council.
