A NORTH Yorkshire council has joined forces with central Government to help householders cut levels of radon in their homes.
Richmondshire District Council is to work in partnership with the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) to cut levels of the naturally occurring radioactive gas.
The scheme was announced yesterday by Environment Minister Michael Meacher, who said previous pilot studies had been successful in encouraging householders to carry out remedial work.
Mr Meacher said radon could add to the risk of lung cancer if proper action to lower levels in homes was not carried out.
Under the programme, the authority will have access to free assessments and expert advice on health issues and remedial measures.
Richmondshire will be one of 31 authorities from across the country to join the programme, which is expected to run over three years.
