RESIDENTS are calling for action after a safety scheme introduced to cut the number of accidents on a busy road has proved to be a headache.

Traffic lights and a new layout were introduced in Marsh House Avenue, Billingham, earlier this year, in a bid to reduce the amount of accidents on the main road through the town.

However, the scheme has turned out to be unpopular with residents, who claim they are suffering from problems created by the noise and fumes from the traffic brought to a standstill outside their houses.

Olive Kelly, who lives just opposite the lights, said: "The lights are right outside my window, which means the cars are at a standstill right outside my house.

"I cannot open my windows and my husband finds it difficult getting off the drive, especially at peak times.

"I have never seen so many cars."

Sue Fairweather, who lives just off the Avenue, said: "The traffic lights are out of sync. The traffic just builds up, especially on a morning, when drivers become confused.

"Drivers who have not been here for a while and are unsure of the lights are having to brake very hard. One day there will be an accident there."

Their case has been taken up by Councillor George Chambers, who represents the area on Stockton Borough Council.

He said: "The scheme has made us all aware of the sheer volume of heavy goods vehicles using the Avenue, even at off-peak times.

"There are three schools along that stretch of road, with lots and lots of youngsters.

"I am fearful, come the bad weather, that there could be vehicles skidding and a number of accidents."

Dave Lynch, team leader of traffic management at Stockton council, said: "We are looking at improving the operation of the signals, either by amending the timings or perhaps amending the layout of the junction itself."
