AN unusual sight will greet a city's visitors this summer - a pedal-powered taxi.

The sustainable transport service, similar to a rickshaw, can carry up to three people. The first vehicle, which took to the roads of Newcastle yesterday, will take tourists and office workers along a mile-long route along the city's Quayside.

The city is following London, York and Oxford in introducing a pilot service, which will be free for the first season.

It is using its army of young volunteer city helpers, known as the Newcastle Knights, to pedal the first pedicabs.
