A TEENAGER died yesterday as he swam in a river with friends.

The 15-year-old was dragged unconscious by firefighters from the Tees at Cleasby, near Darlington.

Paramedics who arrived at the scene tried to resuscitate him, but he died shortly afterwards in Darlington Memorial Hospital.

It is understood the Darlington youngster, who has not been named, disappeared after diving into the river while playing with friends.

A police spotter plane was brought in to help with the search and a rescue boat launched downstream at Blackwell Bridge.

Acting Station Officer Brett Clayton, of County Durham Fire Service, said: "Three firefighters went into the water with lines attached to them for their own safety.

"They were searching for about 10 or 15 minutes, but had started to tire and we were getting concerned that we might have to withdraw them.

"Somehow, one of the firefighters located the casualty under water.

"We tried to resuscitate him but he was unconscious and had been under the water for some time.

"The water is very deep at that stretch and is also known for the undercurrents."

Mr Clayton praised the bravery of the firefighters. "They went beyond the call of duty and their own safety was in question," he said "What has happened highlights the danger of playing in rivers."

Last night, Darlington Police said they were waiting to speak to the friends of the dead boy.
