SOLDIERS at Europe's largest military base could be among thousands to welcome plans for unmarried couples to be given Army accommodation for the first time.

Ministry of Defence chiefs are considering taking the controversial step after complaints from soldiers who claim they are being prevented from leading a normal life.

Until now, Army housing has only been available to married couples, but the regulations could soon be extended to those in a "committed relationship" and with children.

If approved by ministers, the changes could have a major impact on Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire.
