RESIDENTS are to be given a chance to have a say in the future improvements of a town cemetery.

A three-week public consultation has been arranged to decide the priority of work planned for the Linthorpe cemetery in Middlesbrough.

Work includes environmental improvements and renovation to the area, which will be carried out if a £1.1m bid for funding is successful next year.

Middlesbrough Borough Council's public, protection and planning department has commissioned the consultation, which will be hosted by Middlesbrough Environment City.

People's views on what needs to be done to the cemetery will shape the bid for funds.

Commissioner for the environment, Councillor Ken Hall, said: "Improving the environmental conditions in the cemetery and preserving its heritage value will require the active support of local residents and visitors to the cemetery."

The consultation will be at Whinney Banks youth and community centre, from August 21 to 25, 9am to 8pm; at Meath Street community centre, from August 29 to 31, 9am to 2pm; and at the Linthorpe community centre next month.
