POLICE are urging home owners not to be taken in by bogus builders calling at their doors.

Detectives in Bishop Auckland fear that fraudsters could be moving in to the Wear Valley and Teesdale areas after operating on Teesside in recent weeks. They call unannounced offering to carry out repairs, fix roofs, or trim trees. In some cases they claim to be from electricity, gas, or water companies.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Green, head of Bishop Auckland CID, warned yesterday: "These people operate from vans and give out only mobile phone numbers.

"If anybody needs any work done at home they should go to a reputable local builder where they know they can get redress if something goes wrong.

"They should never accept any offer of services from people who call at the door."
