Wolviston bounced back to winning form on Wednesday night with an excellent 4-0 victory over Whitehaven, who only a couple of days earlier had ended Windscale's impressive 100 per cent record.

But Whitehaven found their match at Wolviston and Brian Wake was again an early scorer. Before the interval David Dowd made it 2-0 and during the second half he scored again before Martin Oakley converted a penalty with 20 minutes remaining.

Stanley United recorded their biggest win for a long time as they defeated Ferryhill Athletic 6-0. The goals flowed from Richard Johnson, who rifled a hat-trick, Tommy Spence (2) and Joe McElrue. Jonathan Kirk (3) and Stephen Gent earned Redcar Town a 4-2 victory at home to Cleadon SC and Boldon CA won by a similar margin at Annfield Plain, who are having a very difficult early season because of an extremely high number of injuries.

Robbie David (2), David Southern and Ian Kennedy were on target for Birtley Town in their 4-0 victory at Whitburn and Harton and Westoe took the points at Ryhope CW with goals from Michael Meek and John Wightman.

Robbie Davis and David Southern netted in Birtley Town's 2-1 success at home to Jarrow for whom David Bell replied and Simonside saw off the challenge of Annfield Plain when Lee Metcalfe and Adam Riley struck.

Ferryhill Athletic had mixed fortunes in their two matches. They lost 6-0 to Stanley United on Wednesday but defeated Wolviston 6-5 in an 11-goal thriller when Alan Robson, with a hat-trick, Ian Wlodarczak (2) and Billy Grey found the net.
