Middleton St George maintained their position at the top of Division A with a six wickets victory at home to Witton-le-Wear.

The visitors' batsmen struggled and opener Peter Chrisp with 29 made much impression as the innings closed on 73 after 55 overs.

Paul Robson returned three for 19 in eight overs and Joe Binks had three for 16 from seven overs.

Replying Middleton St George won losing four wickets as both Colin Wheel and Steven Rogers scored 18 runs each. Alan Jones took two of the four wickets to go down for 25 runs in eight overs.

Aldbrough St John are second but they trail the leaders by 11 points after losing by 46 runs to Heighington.

Batting first Heighington reached 134 for seven which included a top scoring 48 by Storey. Responding Aldbrough were all out for 88 as Wake captured seven wickets for 24 runs.

Barton are in third position even though they lost by two wickets to Colburn. Faced with a target of 107 Colburn won after losing eight wickets and they were grateful to French who carried his bat for 34. Percival claimed three for 51 and Bell four for 38 in the Barton attack.

When Barton made first use of the wicket they were all out for 106 as French took four for 24 and Bell three for 17. Percival top scored with 37.

Weardale managed only 107 for nine on their visit to Gilling West for whom Wilson claimed four for 33 before an undefeated 44 by Bosley earned Gilling a seven wickets success.

Ian Dent (61), Poole (37) and Brown (43no) led Raby Castle to a match winning 175 for five at home to Eryholme who were 36 all out. Dent completed a good day by claiming three for seven and so did Poole whose four wickets cost him 11 runs.

Dales totalled 89 at home to Trimdon who won by seven wickets. Coughtrey with five for 50 and Peacock who returned five for 32 did the damage with the ball before opening batsman Carter carried his bat for 34 in Trimdon's reply of 93 for three.

Barningham reached 88 for nine with Garbutt taking six for 27 before losing by four wickets to Rockliffe Park. Walker, with three for 35 and Mossford, who captured three for 32, were in good form with the ball for Barningham.

Cockerton are leaders of Division B by just two points from Spennymoor. Cockerton saw off the challenge of Lands by three wickets after bowling out their opponents for 100 when Nicholson claimed six wickets for ten runs. Lee, who went in first, top scored with 46 when Cockerton replied with 114 for three.

Spennymoor are just two points adrift of Cockerton and they had 42 runs to spare defeating King James following a high scoring game.

Collingwood (75no), Nicholson (30), Ball (51) and Ross (42) propelled Spennymoor to 223 for four.

Openers Rowe (34) and Rowley (46) gave King James reply a good send off and Franklin added 34 but when time was called King James had made only 181 for nine with Groves claiming three for 46 and Grainger four for 65.

Haughton had 59 runs in hand of visitors Ingleton. Batting first Haughton totalled 161 for eight of which Barker made 40 and when Ingleton replied they were all out for 102. Edwards had outstanding figures of five for 29 and Gill took three for ten.

Brompton-on-Swale edged Middleton in Teesdale by 16 runs. When they made first use of the wicket Brompton reached 136 for eight including 39 by Raw and 43 from Moston while for Middleton in Teesdale Watson captured five wickets for 62 runs.

When they battled Middleton were all out for 120 after early order batsmen Bradley (34) and Lee-Shield (64) had given them a good send off.

Cliffe totalled 132 for nine defeating Heighington by six runs. A useful 48 by Rutherford helped Cliffe while for Heighington Olney returned four for 42 and Fawcett captured three for 27. Responding Heighington finished with 126 after opener McGrady had added 62. Adamson with five for 28 and Rutherford (4-41) won the game for Cliffe with their bowling.

Hetton Lyons Sunday League

Stockton defeated Annfield Plain by nine wickets after restricting their opponents to 106 all out. Graeme Carr top scored with 56 for Plain while for Stockton Ahmed captured three wickets for five runs. Stockton conceded one wicket as Mason carried his bat for 46 and Ward contributed an unbeaten 42.

South Shields easily defeated Burnopfield at Wood Terrace after scoring 169 for four. Anthony Marshall top scored with 72 and Dixon scored 39 before Burnopfield were all out for 58 as Lowes took four wickets for ten runs.

Marsden overtook the Whitburn total of 144 for eight losing four wickets. Ian Whale set the scene with 62 and Harry Mann made 36 and when Whitburn batted first Andrew Turns scored 32 and Eden Elstob top scored with 37.

Swalwell made 142 when they hosted Whickham. Hodgson captured seven wickets for 46 and Rob Cameron three for 32 when Swalwell batted first and responding Whickham were 50 for four when the match was abandoned. Guy Briggs claimed three of four wickets to fall for 14 runs.

Boldon were in a strong position at Lanchester who were 29 for two needing 201 for victory when rain arrived and the match between Consett and Bill Quay was also abandoned. Bill Quay were 116 for four with Hudson unbeaten on 56 after Consett had totalled 167 all out. Stewart (34) and Williamson (39) provided the bulk of the runs while for Bill Quay Brown had four for 41, Paul Bentham three for 34 and William Gardner three for 62.

Memorial Cup

Whitburn celebrated winning the cup when they had 38 runs to spare over Murton when the final was staged at Philadelphia on Sunday.

Batting first Whitburn totalled 99 for six with Carty top scoring with 43 while for Murton Alderson returned two for 11 and Elliott captured two for 13.

When they replied Murton were back in the pavilion with just 61 runs on the board as Siddle claimed three for ten and Neesham three for 14.

Murton reached the final defeating Boldon by 16 runs. Batting first, Murton finished with 76 for eight which included 25 by David Scorer who recorded three boundaries. Gamble, took three for 22, Bennett three for 19 and Clark, two for nine, the trio all bowling four overs for Boldon.

When they went into bat, Boldon were dismissed for 60 which included a top scoring 22 by Mark Turner with four fours. James Watson claimed two for seven in two overs and Tommy Elliott had two for 15 from four overs in the Murton attack
