A LITTLE girl's holiday fun ended in tears when the fire brigade had to rescue her when she became trapped behind a lamppost.
Cheryl Hughes, seven, of Chester-le-Street, was having fun sliding down a lamppost outside her grandmother's house in Grange Villa. But it all went horribly wrong when Cheryl's leg became stuck behind the post and Durham firefighters had to rush out to save her.
"She had a real fright and shed a few tears," said Cheryl's grandmother Connie Turner, of West Street.
"I think it was the firemen coming in the engine with their equipment and uniforms on as much as anything.
"She'd been sliding up and down the lamp as if it was a fire brigade post and her leg was really badly stuck.
"I ended up getting concerned and a neighbour dialled 999. The lads were great, but as I say, Cheryl was a little upset and is still nervous talking about it.
"Anyway, it all ended all right in the end and I suppose she'll have a tale to tell when she goes back home and starts back at school."
