A COUNCIL is to step up its fight against motorists who park their vehicles outside homes illegally.

Darlington Borough Council employs two full-time and six part-time wardens to patrol its 18 car parks and residential parking areas.

The service is funded from the fines generated by the enforcement activities of off-street and on-street parking.

One of the part-time posts is vacant, and there is also an additional workload, with the new Hollyhurst Road residents' parking scheme, which will come into force in the next few months.

This will effectively double the number of residential parking spaces requiring patrol and, as a result, it is being suggested that the part-time post should be made full-time.

Councillors will be told next week that this should result in income of between £10,000 and £15,000 being raised through fines
