Quakers RC

Once again the club's members were the largest contingent at the Darlington Road Races with more than 100 of the clubs members taking part, several of which recorded personal best times despite the hot weather.

The juniors performed well in the fun run with Carl Harpin winning by nine seconds recording a time of 5:04 with Luke Kelton third in 5:14. Neil Robinson finished fourth with 5:15 and Alan Carter was fifth in 5:20.

The girls were not to be outdone by the boy's performances with Julia Orr the first girl finisher in 11th place overall recording 5:35. Abigail Wilson finished third girl in 5:54 and 18th place overall. Carina Mooney was sixth girl and 20th overall with 6:08, just one second ahead of Katherine James in seventh place.

Carl Bedford won the newly introduced U17 category finishing in 37th position with a time of 37:04 while Barry Stephenson was the first of the senior's runners to finish the 10km event, recording 32:58 for an impressive seventh place. Ian Scott finished second O45 veteran in 35:58 for 20th place and the women's team of Dawn Richardson, who was fifth lady in 40:32, Helen Young 45:03 and Andrea Tucker 45:23 took the

third ladies team prize.

On the fells, Ken Maynard finished seventh at the midweek Whorlton Chase in a time of 46:52 followed by Keith Richardson in 13th place with 50:31. Scott Archbold recorded 51:55 for 17th place while Dave Mason was 20th in 53:14. Joe O'Donnell finished 30th in 55:28 and Jes Smith ran 55:44 for 36th place. Dave England recorded 56:44 in 4lst place. Mick Mullen was 49th with 58:31 and Richard Tait ran 61:00 for 57th position.

Jenny Haworth finished in 61:21 in 58th place and Pat Murray was 65th in 67:45 and Mike Horan ran 72:00 for 66th place.

The 1.5-mile Roseberry Topping Fell Race saw the club's youngsters show clean heels to the senior members. At 12 years-old, Luke Kelton recorded 1-3:42 for 14th place with 17 year old Carl Bedford next to finish in 29th position with 15:42.

Dave England recorded 17:14 for 54th place while Sally Rouse was 58th in 17:25. Jes Smith ran 17:45 for 62nd place and Mike Horan finished 80th in 22:16.

The Clay Bank East Fell Race saw Scott Archbold first to finish for the club with a time of 44:16 for 30th position and Keith Richardson finished in 32nd place with 44:45. Mick Mullen was 40th in 47:31. Harry Manuel was 72nd in 53:50 and Mike Horan finished 80th with 60:04.

With the date of the annual Darlington 10km road race being brought forward, the club are staging a 10km road race and Fun Run at Hamsterley Forest this Sunday with all of the proceeds going to the Butterwicke Hospice.

If you usually take part in the Darlington 10km race on that day you are invited to go along and help raise some money for the hospice. Entries will be taken on the day while

If you run, jog, jump or throw or if you intend to take part in any local events this year, regardless of the distance or the pace, the Quakers invite you to come along and try the clubs' evening training sessions and take advantage of the clubs specialist coaches.

If your target is this years Great North Run, the Darlington 10km road race or if your ambitions are even more modest, advice will be freely given by their seventeen-strong coaching staff with no obligation to join the club.

Group training sessions are held at Hummersknott School, Edinburgh Drive, Darlington, every Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6:30pm, free of charge.

Newcomers of all abilities from eight years of age and older, are welcome to attend and take part with no obligation to join.

Elswick Harriers

Jimmy Bell, who has represented the club with distinction for many seasons, won the gold medal in the O50 section of the BVBF national marathon championship in the Isle of Man.

Bell finished eighth overall in the race and first O50 in a time of 2hrs 49mins.

At the other end of the scale, Dale Hewitson, who is a very promising U17 shot putter, travelled to Cholworth near Barnsley to represent the North-East in the North of England inter-league championships and game away with victory in the U17 shot by throwing 14.36.

Ryan McLeod continued his excellent season by taking third place in the U17 1500m in a personal best of 4:16.3.

The cross country season will soon be with us and the club is looking to recruit new members.

Elvet Striders

Durham husband and wife triathletes Mike and Kim Hall have proved age is no boundary to success as they have both won European and national titles.

Mike, representing the 70-plus age group, won gold in the European Triathlon Championships in Holland, first in the National Triathlon sprint distance in Shropshire and fifth in World Tri Champs in Perth, Australia.

Kim has been competing in the 65-plus age group and is now the Olympic and sprint distance national triathlon champion after the Shropshire competition.

Paul Dunn continued his success in the Durham Dales Fell Series with fourth position in the Monks Moor race in 1.34. Geoff Watson ran 1.56.

Watson also competed in the 3.5m Forest Burn, finishing in 26.49.

Track specialist Judith Battersby ran 2.23 in the 800m at the British Vets Championships, 64.50 over 400m at NE Vets track league and 5.29 in the Venmore Mile at Jarrow.

Over a longer distance, Andy Scaife covered 90 miles in two days, biking, canoeing and orienteering in the Yorkshire Dales Ace Adventure Challenge. He and his partner earned sixth place.

New Marske Harriers

Eight members competed in the Tholthorpe 10km road race on a very hot day. First home winning the over 60s prize was Stuart Edwards in 41.41 and next to finish and second over 60 was Ronnie Sherwood in 42.30. Mike Harper (O60) was next in 44.09.

Then followed John R Smith 45.22, Colin Scollay 46.18, Dave Matthews 47.16, Sandra Jemson 47.16, and Paul Dickinson 52.35.

In the Erewash 10 mile road race, Shaun O'Grady clocked another PB with 53.42 and Paul Welham ran 57.21.
