Darlington Building Society NYSD League

Hartlepool had eight wickets to spare in defeating Barnard Castle in Division Three. Faced with a target of 130 they were indebted to a first-wicket partnership of 89 between Danny Shurmer and 15-year-old Peter Rhoden (23). Shurmer batted throughout the innings and finished undefeated on 73.

Batting first, Barnard Castle were restricted to 129 for seven which included 41 by Andy Toulson. Peter Robinson bowled throughout in the Hartlepool attack and in 25 overs, eight of which were maidens, he returned the splendid figures for three for 51. Kevin Peake had three for 43 from 17 overs including seven maidens.

Redcar defeated Marske by 23 runs. When they made first use of the wicket Redcar struggled and managed only 122 as Holtby took four for 18 in 14 overs and Shaw had three for 13 from his ten overs spell.

Replying, however, Marske found runs even more difficult and were dismissed for 99. Stephen Eland sent down 17.4 economical overs in the Redcar attack returning two for 26, Stephen Lee had three for 33 from 12 overs and Gavin Readman three for 17 from his ten overs stint.

In Division Four, Richmondshire defeated Yarm by six wickets. Batting first, Yarm were all out in 48 overs for 98 which included 36 by Cardwell. Kevin Allsobrook had the outstanding figures of six for 32 from 13 overs and Flemming returned three for 24 in ten overs for Richmondshire who secured the necessary runs losing four wickets in 29.1 overs. Their match winners was Michael White who scored a half-century.

Bass North Cleveland League

FOUR games were started in Division One - but all ended prematurely either because of rain or bad light.

New Marske realised 191 for seven from the maximum 45 overs at Moorsholm when Martin Fox scored 53 and Jed Alderson 58 not out. Stuart Ward bowled 22 overs unchanged for Moorholm and returned figures of four for 77 while Hucker took two for 31. Moorsholm were ten without loss from two overs when the rain arrived.

Ormesby Hall B were in a strong position against Normanby Parklands B when they needed 61 runs for victory with nine wickets in tacts. Faced with a target of 87, they were 26 for one from seven overs when the weather intervened.

Parklands struggled through 24 overs as Tony Roberts captured four for 32 from 12 overs and Anthonly Cook claimed three for nine in four overs.

The top clash between Normanby Parklands A and Hinderwell also ended prematurely. Normanby Parklands, who lead the table from Dormans with Hinderwell third, made 208 for six from 45 overs.

The Ramzan brothers, Talib and Arif (22), put on 79 runs in partnership. Talib top scored with 91 which included one six and 13 boundaries.

Hinderwell had scored 57 for one from 18 overs and Clive Lyth had made an unbeaten 27 when play was halted because of bad light.

Dormans had lost four wickets, three of them to Chris Barritt for six runs, with 38 runs on the board when they responded to the Loftus A total of 103 from 39.2 overs.

Chris Barritt top performed with 26 for Loftus A while Dormans Craig Dale had four for 32 from 20 overs, Javes Ramzan returned three for 35 from ten overs and Kenny Holland captured three for two runs in 2.2 overs.

The Ladle reached 40 for three visiting Greatham Paragonians when rain resulted in abadonment.

Hetton Lyons Sunday League

The weather was the only winner when the penultimate programme of the season was played at the weekend. Whickham were unfortunate in their home game with South Northumberland since they required 19 runs with five wickets left after South Northumberland had been bowled out for 85. Ian Hodgson was in magnificent form for Whickham and in an inspired spell of bowling he captured eight for 34 runs.

Felling totalled 198 and Marsden were 12 for none when the weather intervened and Lanchester totalled 142, but their game against Hetton Lyons was also a victim of the weather.

More play was possible at Gateshead Fell who reached 179 against South Shields. John Donkin made a half-century and John Foster contributed 31, while for South Hetton, Massey took four wickets for 34 runs.

Sedgefield were 61 for nine, responding to Burnopfield's 95 all out. David Boorman took four for 24 and Mark Alderson had two for seven in the Sedgefield attack, but when the home side batted they found runs even more difficult to find as Stephen Atkinson returned three for 12 and Deakin had three for 13.

NatWest Tyne League

HalTwhistle reduced Haydon Bridge's lead at the top to six points when their game at Stocksfield went ahead. Haydon Bridge also managed to stage their match with Matfen but they lost by six wickets and gained only four points.

Home side Stocksfield totalled 100 which included an unbeaten 45 by Chris Catnach, who recorded seven boundaries in his innings. Chris Clark bowled an economical end for Hatwhistle and in 19.3 overs, five of which were maidens, he claimed four for 42 while John Hepple had two for 23.

Replying, Haltwhistle lost a couple of early wickets, but Alan Bradbury held the innings together and he batted throughout, finishing with 28 not out.

The biggest contribution to the Haltwhistle total came from extras, 31 of them, and the visitors won by six wickets, claiming the maximum 12 points.

Haydon Bridge totalled 134 for eight at home to Matfen who are third from bottom. Opener Neil Kendrew scored 28 and Gibson made 35 before Duffy carried his bat for 28. Lowes and Buckton both claimed a couple of wickets in the Matfen attack. Replying, Matfen were given a perfect start by openers Mathers with 65 and Charlton (25) before Buckton also scored 25 in a four wickets victory.
