Neil Killeen bowled Durham to a one-run victory when he struck three times in the final over to shatter Derbyshire in a dramatic finale to the National League Division Two season at Derby.

In gloomy light, Killeen bowled James Pyemont and century-making Matthew Cassar and had Simon Lacey caught at point.

The teams occupied the bottom two places before the match, but Durham's second successive win took them above Hampshire.

Derbyshire went into that final over needing six runs with five wickets in hand, but Killeen kept his nerve and although Cassar played brilliantly for his 126 off 136 balls, he was beaten by another full-length ball.

Cassar seemed to have won the game in partnerships with Steve Stubbings and Luke Sutton, which had taken Derbyshire to within nine runs of their 230 target.

Stubbings made 32, helping Cassar add 87 in 13 overs before he was bowled by Ian Hunter, but Sutton then joined Cassar in a fifth-wicket stand which put on 73 from 11 overs.

Killeen bowled Sutton for 20 and although Derbyshire were still red-hot favourites to claim only their third win of the season, the seamer grabbed the honours to finish with six for 31.

He had also made a valuable unbeaten 20 off 13 balls at the end of Durham's innings which lifted them to 229 for seven after spinners Lacey and Lian Wharton had applied the brake.

Jimmy Daley and Paul Collingwood had taken advantage of some wayward seam bowling, but Wharton and Lacey reigned in the batsmen with Wharton claiming three for 29 from nine impressive overs.

Daley followed his 104 in last Sunday's win against Surrey with 54, while Collingwood made his seventh half-century of the season in this competition.

He finished with 609 runs, 11 more than Simon Katich. The Australian's bid to beat Dean Jones's Durham record of 656 runs in a season in the one-day league faltered with only 18 runs in his last innings.

Nicky Phillips and Killeen hit out lustily in the final overs, while Cassar timed the ball superbly from the start of Derbyshire's reply.

Although Michael Di Venuto and Rob Bailey went cheaply, Cassar made his 50 off 76 balls

l The final day of Derbyshire's championship match against Somerset was washed out on Saturday, leaving Derbyshire one point behind Durham at the foot of the table.

Ian Fisher bagged the final Hampshire wicket with the last ball of the season in the last game to be played at Northlands Road, Southampton, to bring Yorkshire a thrilling victory by 72 runs.

The left-arm spinner had former Yorkshire all-rounder Alex Morris edging low into the slips where it was scooped up by Gavin Hamilton.
