A YOUTH has appeared in court charged with a £34,000 burglary at a suspended CID chief's home.
David Ions, 18, of Appleton Road, Stockton, is charged with breaking into Detective Superintendent Ray Mallon's home in Stockton and stealing £34,284 worth of property belonging to his wife, Carol Mallon.
Ions appeared before Teesside magistrates yesterday, when he was remanded on bail to reappear before the bench on October 13.
Ions is alleged to have broken into the house on September 27, two years after two other men, aged 21 and 19, made an attempted break-in.
On that occasion an off-duty policeman heard the sound of breaking glass and saw the duo as they smashed two stained glass panes in Mr Mallon's front door.
Three years ago Det Supt Mallon, the man who pioneered zero tolerance techniques in fighting crime, arrested a teenager after he drove off in the detective's Saab from a car park at Seaton Carew.
