ORGANISERS of Darlington Community Carnival are hoping next year's event will be an even bigger success after going online as part of The Northern Echo's CommuniGate scheme.

The carnival committee has joined more than 90 other non-profit-making groups in signing up to create a free website since the scheme launched on September 1.

Committee member Bruce Askew said: "We're always starved of money and need sponsorship.

"This site will give us more publicity and make more people aware of who we are and what we're about."

A public meeting will be held at Darlington's Arts Centre on October 12 to decide the theme for next year's event and the main carnival charity.

Mr Askew said 2001 would be the 19th year of the carnival, which features a procession, an afternoon of entertainment and stalls in Stanhope Park and a musical event in the market square.

He said: "It took about an hour to build this website and I've learned enough to be able to extend and edit it."

The CommuniGate website has had 15,500 visitors since its launch last month.
