REVELLERS at a Newcastle nightclub were amazed when pop star Robbie Williams dropped by for a few drinks.

The superstar was celebrating the success of his two nights at the Telewest Arena and drowning out a home-team defeat at St James' Park on Saturday when he decided to sample some of the city's famous nightlife.

After Saturday night's performance, the Stoke-born singer and about 40 of his road crew took the coach down to the Quayside and walked into the new Sea nightclub, which was packed with more than 1,000 customers.

And while Robbie rationed himself to just a couple of Sambuccas, the generous multi-millionaire splashed out more than £2,000, buying the best champagne and other drinks for the crew and delighted customers.

Although the group booked a private room, Robbie and his bodyguards chatted with the customers, as well as Newcastle United players also in the club.

Bob Senior, managing director of the company that runs Sea, told how he received a telephone call about half an hour before the pop star's arrival. He said: "It was a pleasant surprise. The news went around the club like wildfire and there was an instant buzz. The customers were amazed, and women went berserk

"We were playing his music anyway but it's somewhat special when the actual artist is in the club.

"He was a really nice guy. He was very calm and relaxed and was chatting to everyone saying how much he had enjoyed Newcastle.

"He spent over an hour in the club and left about one o'clock in the morning."
