DARLINGTON Borough Council is about to adopt a new customer charter for its town centre car parks.

The authority operates several car parks in the town centre with spaces for 2,200 vehicles, which produce income of about £1.2m a year.

It aims to obtain secure status for the car parks, as awarded by the AA and the police.

This sets out a minimum standard of safety for vehicles and their owners.

To qualify for the status, a customer charter and care policy must be published.

The customer charter must include pledges that the council will minimise the opportunity for personal or car crime; monitor the car parks with closed-circuit television and regularly patrol them; and provide an emergency help point where customers can get direct help and advice.

In turn, motorists using the car parks must buy and display a valid car park ticket, place valuable articles out of sight and ensure their car is locked and any security devices switched on.

Councillors will discuss the plans to apply for secure status at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday.
