A composer is hoping for a hit with his CD dedicated to a football team.

The ups and downs of Middlesbrough Football Club are the inspiration behind a classical music symphony released this week by David Golightly.

As a lifelong supporter of the team, he wrote the music, called Symphony Number One, especially for Boro chairman Steve Gibson and the rest of the club's players and personnel.

The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra perform the 46-minute work, and the CD comes with a Boro-themed cover and a tribute to Mr Gibson.

Mr Golightly, of Stanhope, County Durham, teamed up with North-East conductor Gavin Sutherland to create it.

He said: "I have been a Middlesbrough fan since my grandfather introduced me to the club when I was seven years old.

"The work reflects the club's history over the last five years or so."

The symphony, which took four years to compose, has four movements, each inspired by the events of Middlesbrough's rollercoaster ride, including the optimism of Wembley visits and the pain of defeats.

"The last movement, with its march, tries to capture the atmosphere of a typical matchday, with the excitement and the two halves of the game built into the structure of the music," said Mr Golightly.

Sections of the work will be played as part of Middlesbrough's pre-match music.

Mr Gibson said: "I'm touched that David should decide to dedicate to me and the club a piece of work that is obviously dear to him.
