FLOODING and the fuel crisis have meant an overspend by North Yorkshire Police, a meeting will be told today.

Extra patrols had to be deployed to escort convoys of lorries demonstrating against high tax levies on petrol in September.

Officers were also needed to marshal queues at forecourts around the county - both to limit the risk on the roads and to ensure that frayed tempers did not result in violence at the pumps.

However, some of the £165,000 costs may be recovered from the Home Office.

The Government may also contribute towards the additional financial burden imposed by this month's deluge.

The county's police played a significant role coordinating the operation to limit the damage done, particularly by the River Ouse around York and Selby.

The figures are part of a report on the constabulary's budget, presented when the North Yorkshire Police Authority meets at New Earswick Village Hall at 10.30am today.

Members of the public are welcome to attend.
