FOOTBALLERS in Hartlepool could soon benefit from a £2m funding boost.
The borough council has submitted a bid to the National Football Federation for money to revitalise facilities in the town.
If it is successful, the money will be spent on improving changing facilities and pitch quality, as well as encouraging more young people and women to take up the game.
More than 70 football teams use council facilities during the season, but there are fears that support will dwindle if pitches are not improved.
A council spokesman said: "Much of the commitment and enthusiasm from players, coaches and officials is in jeopardy, as players are faced with the considerable frustration of deteriorating changing facilities and poor quality pitches."
If the bid is successful, the improvements would be made at Grayfields, Rift House recreation ground, Seaton Park and Central Park.
A football development officer would also be employed.
Hartlepool council has secured £150,000 towards the total bid of £2,727,267 and is hoping the rest of the money will come from the National Football Federation.
