PLANS for a new scout headquarters in school grounds look likely to be approved despite residents' objections.

Scouts in Marske have applied to Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council for permission to move from their basebehind the Tithe Barn, Marske High Street, to a new building in the grounds of Bydales School.

A plan for the headquarters was first submitted in August, and described a three-storey building with dormitories.

Following complaints from residents, the group changed its proposal, reducing the number of floors to two and dropping the dormitories.

But despite the concessions, families nearby have expressed strong objections to the plan.

They have written 18 letters of complaint and submitted a petition bearing 92 signatures.

Among their concerns are that the building would cause increases in noise, traffic, vandalism and litter.

They also cite worries that the building would lessen the value of their homes and block their views of the sea, and that they have not been properly consulted on the plans.

But a report to the planning committee, due to meet on Thursday, recommends approval.
