A FORGOTTEN estate could be on the brink of winning a battle for a bus service of its own.

Houses were built at Regents Park in Colburn, near Catterick Garrison, a few years ago, but so far the homes have not been linked to the public transport network.

That means residents without cars face a ten-minute walk to the nearest bus stop - day and night, whatever the weather.

Andrew Worboys has been among the campaigners pressing for action. Although he is capable of making the journey when necessary, he is concerned his 11-year-old daughter could be at risk.

"I've asked the county council about a school bus from Regents Park to Risedale Community College, in Catterick Garrison, but it's a journey of less than three miles so we don't qualify for free, home-to-school transport.

"That means my daughter has to catch the public service - but the nearest bus stop is ten minutes away on foot.

"It's getting dark when she comes home and it's hardly a well-lit route. I am worried something could happen on her way home," he said.

Mr Worboys says he was urged to write to the council with his concerns but, as he is dyslexic, he is reluctant to put pen to paper.

"It shouldn't be necessary anyway. I've raised the issue and it should now be up to the council to examine it,'' he said.

County public transport manager Richard Owens confirmed yesterday that the authority is researching a solution.

"The matter was first brought to our attention last summer and, when we had a look, it was evident access for buses would be difficult as most of the streets on Regent Park are cul-de-sacs.

"However, I can confirm we have been speaking to the ward councillor on the Richmondshire authority and we will be revisiting the area soon.

"Perhaps we can then look at alternatives, which could include a new bus stop for public services somewhere closer to the estate."
