HARDY souls are once again stepping forward for the annual ritual of taking the plunge in the North Sea on Boxing Day.

Traditionally, the biggest December 26 dip on the North-East coast takes place at Seaburn, Sunderland.

Organisers at Sunderland Lions Club are receiving scores of entries every day from volunteers keen to immerse themselves in the icy waters for a good cause during the 25th Boxing Day dip.

Last year, 1,092 applications were received - of whom 754 of turned up on the day.

Barry Stephenson, of Sunderland Lions Club, said that, traditionally, a number of volunteers cry off ahead of the dip - depending on the weather and conditions.

"If we get about 75 per cent turning up we think we've done well, given the time of the year.

"A lot depends on the weather. What seemed like a good idea in the pub a few weeks earlier does not always seem so clever when people wake up on Boxing Day morning."

Mr Stephenson said that, so far, 850 people have signed up for this year's dip, but added that many applications are lodged at the eleventh hour, or on the day itself.

All those taking part are welcome to raise funds for the cause of their choice, but 20 per cent of the money gathered is earmarked for charities nominated by the Lions' Club.

Dippers should meet at the Seaburn Centre, on Sunderland seafront, ready for the 11am parade across Whitburn Road on to Seaburn beach.

The procession and fancy dress costume judging will be led by the Mayor of Sunderland, Councillor Brian Dodds, and the Mayoress, his wife Sylvia, plus club president Peter Fielding.

Anyone interested in entering the dip should contact Mr Stephenson, after 5pm, on 0191-528 5780.
