Detectives investigating a North-East murder believe vital witnesses have not come forward for fear of prosecution.

Known criminal Kevin Mawhinney was stabbed to death in a street brawl during the early hours of Boxing Day.

The 33-year-old was found by a friend lying only yards from his home in James Street, Easington Colliery, County Durham, shortly after 12.30am. He was taken to Hartlepool General Hospital where he died.

A post mortem examination revealed the cause of death was a single stab wound.

A 30-strong team of detectives was yesterday carrying out house-to-house inquiries and a detailed search of the James Street area.

Last night, Detective Superintendent Tom Ryan, leading the inquiry, said: "We know that Mr Mawhinney was at home with friends that night celebrating the festive season.

"On two occasions, a group of people came to the door, resulting in an altercation.

"On the second occasion, the fracas continued in the street and we believe Mr Mawhinney sustained the injury that killed him during that time.

"A number of people armed themselves during the altercation. They may be worried about coming forward with information, fearing they will be implicated in a public order offence.

"However I would stress that we are investigating a murder, not public order offences."

A Durham Police spokes-man yesterday confirmed that the dead man was known to police, but details of his criminal past were not revealed.

Detectives want to hear from anyone who was in the area of James Street around the time of the murder.
