Substitute Stephen Glass rescued a point for Newcastle after they had fallen behind to a controversial penalty at St. James' Park.
Glass swept the ball home in the 82nd minute on the end of a move which also featured fellow subs Daniel Cordone and Lomana Lualua.
Justice was done after David Beckham had blasted in a 24th-minute penalty harshly awarded against Clarence Acuna, who was adjudged by referee Mike Riley to have brought down Ryan Giggs.
