A COMMANDO from Hartlepool is spending the start of the New Year in Croatia. Royal Marine Corporal Paul Rowland, 24, above, has spent Christmas and New Year away from home while he and his colleagues of 845 Naval Air Squadron help to maintain an uncertain peace in the former republic of Yugoslavia. Their primary task is multi-national casualty evacuation and the transport of immediate response medical teams to serious incidents, which may be road traffic accidents or landmine explosions. The squadron will withdraw from Split to return to Yeovilton early this month, after eight years of continuous service in the former republic - the longest serving British unit there.
