A HEALTH and swimming complex could be built on the site of Durham Baths, if plans are approved.

The multi-million pound scheme would create up to 100 jobs and replace the current baths, which have stood on the city centre site for 70 years, with two swimming pools.

Durham City Council is planning to sell the building and appoint a top national leisure company to run the new centre.

It is understood that most, or all of the building, is likely to be replaced by the larger centre.

Designs have not yet been produced and council bosses insist the development next to the racecourse and woodland would be sensitive.

It is hoped planning permission will be granted within months and that the building will be finished by the end of the year.

Included in the centre would be an 18m learner pool and 25m six-lane adult pool.

The council will team up with health authorities and groups, Sport England and colleges to develop the site. There are plans to work with Durham University and New College Durham to use the complex for clinical and sports research.

The current baths were opened by Lord Barnard in 1932 to replace the public wash house and baths, built in 1856.
