A DOG agility team has launched a fundraising drive to allow it to realise its dream of appearing at Crufts.

The Barney Bullets team, which is part of Barnard Castle Dog Club, desperately needs up to £1,000 so they can compete in the prestigious dog show, in March.

The County Durham team became one of the smallest clubs in history last year to qualify for flyball - one of the fastest growing dog sports in Britain, which is to be televised during the show.

Dogs compete in relays, jumping hurdles and retrieving a tennis ball, which they have to press a pedal to release.

Barney Bullets made it through to Crufts after competing in a qualifying heat against 15 teams from northern England and Scotland.

Aileen Clarke, trainer at Barnard Castle Dog Club, said: "This means so much to us - Crufts is such a big event and we are such a small club.

"We don't know if we will get the money we need - if we don't and we have to call it off we will all be absolutely devastated."

The cash is needed to pay for travelling expenses to and from the event at Birmingham's National Exhibition Centre, board and lodgings and a new set of tracksuits for the team.

The team consists of six dogs and eight people - among them dinner ladies, shop assistants, a farmer's wife and a retired nurse.

Financial help, which could include donations, sponsorship, or fundraising ideas, is needed desperately.

Anyone who can help is asked to write to Barnard Castle Dog Training Club, c/o David Heywood, team treasurer, The Hollies, Barningham, Richmond DL11 7DW.
